Fifield Fabrication English Wheel Anvils

 
Fabricating the lower wheels (anvils) for the English wheel.

Start with a 3 inch diameter piece of 12L14 cold rolled steel a bit over 3 inches long. True the ends to 3" length and then drill/ream the hole for the axel/mandrel.

Mount the assembled mandrel in the lathe.

Turn the outer surface true to the reamed hole

Add some bluing to ease marking the center.

Turn the 1/16th steps to the calculated depth on the right.

And on the left. Anvil steps completed for 3.25" radius with 1/4" flat - ready for filing and polishing.

Here is a second anvil with steps completed for a 2.375" radius with 1/8" flat - ready for filing and polishing..
