Fifield Fabrication Leather Covered Hardwood Slapper

Start with a chunk of hardwood, commonly called "firewood".

Using a joiner, flatten two sides perpendicular to each other. Using a planner, flatten the other two sides parallel to the first two - make the piece rectangular. Draw an outline on one side of the side profile desired, likewise for the top profile. Cut away from the outlines with a band saw. Contour sand on a belt sander.

Finish with your choice of finishes - this slapper is cherry with three coats of clear semi gloss Minwax Polyurethane finish brushed on. Other choices might be boiled linseed oil or tung oil.

If one was fun, here are two - ash on top, cherry below - just need to add the leather on the beater surface - TBD.
